book onlineWhat is gynecology?
Gynecology focuses on the care of a woman’s reproductive system, including the vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and breasts. Care usually includes a yearly exam, with other visits scheduled on an as-needed basis. Gynecologists are also able to perform in-office, outpatient, and hospital-based surgeries and procedures.
What conditions are treated as part of gynecology?
Gynecologists have extensive training to treat a range of conditions. You should schedule an appointment with these physicians if you have, or suspect you have, any of the following conditions:
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Pelvic pain
- Cancer and precancerous conditions of the reproductive system
- Urinary incontinence
- Abnormal or irregular periods
- Dysmenorrhea, or painful periods
- Menorrhagia, or heavy periods
- Pelvic organ prolapse
What can I expect during a visit to a gynecologist?
During a typical annual visit, your doctor updates your history and asks if you are experiencing any new, concerning symptoms. Next, they assess your weight, height, and vital signs (e.g., temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiration as needed).
A visit to the gynecologist also usually involves a complete breast and pelvic exam. Depending on your age and health status, your doctor may perform a Pap test.
Your regular exam also is the ideal time to discuss other issues, such as family planning, infertility, and mammograms.
In addition to the regular exam, you can schedule an appointment anytime you experience symptoms, such as irregular bleeding, discharge, or abdominal pain. Gynecologists, like those at Commonwealth OB-GYN, talk with you about these issues and together, you develop a treatment plan.
